One of my favorite things to do on weekends is to go out searching for hidden waterfalls. There’s something magical about stumbling upon a secluded waterfall after a tough hike – it’s like finding a secret gem in the wilderness.
Here’s how I usually plan my waterfall hunts:
Research Less-Traveled Trails: I tend to look for trails that are less popular and might not be well-marked on typical hiking apps. Local forums and older trail guides can often have clues about hidden or lesser-known falls.
Bringing the Right Gear: Waterfalls mean getting wet, so I always pack water shoes and a waterproof bag for my phone and camera gear. It’s also a good idea to bring trekking poles to help navigate slippery rocks.
Timing is Key: I try to visit these spots during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the best light for photography. After a recent rainfall is also the perfect time, as the waterfalls are usually more impressive then.
Navigating Safely: Some of these locations are off-trail, so having a GPS app with offline maps (or a physical map) is crucial. I always mark my starting point and key waypoints along the way.
Leave No Trace: While it’s awesome to discover these hidden spots, I always follow Leave No Trace principles to make sure the area stays pristine for others to enjoy.
